Hello flavour adventurers and welcome to the first edition of The Trail Mix: SEQ Edition Each month we’ll take you on a foodie's adventure through the rich culinary heritage of South East Queensland – we’ll taste local produce, meet top-tier chefs and local cooks, look at what’s new and what’s in season, and shine the light on flavour-makers, farmers, chefs, brewers, distillers and food artisans across this incredible region. How lucky are we! This program is driven by a great love to share and promote the incredible food and drink experiences on offer in South East Queensland. The 2025 and beyond vision As manager, my aim is to build it, season it, celebrate it, and share it. The trails of this region deserve it! Here’s a little about me - producing stories about Queensland has been my life. I created and produced the television show The Great South East for nearly 20 years for Channel 7. This fuelled my passion for celebrating the people and businesses that make South East Queensland so GREAT, and I went on the create other shows that focused on local stories – Creek to Coast for example! This stuff is in my DNA! I’m looking forward to introducing you to many of my friends as well as making new ones together. My aim is to get YOU on the FLAVOUR ROAD, to explore, taste and meet, and then share your experiences.

First – let’s catch up!

SEQ Food Trails has been around for a few years. The concept was created by CoMSEQ (Councils of Mayors South East Queensland) as a way to promote the region and encourage visitation, spotlight producers and local businesses, and provide a digital portal to the region’s amazing offerings.

Tommerup's Dairy Farm together with Harrys Paddock and Tommy’s Pastured Eggs supply artisan dairy products, pastured pork and veal, organically grown vegetables and pastured eggs. Some of our best and favourite events have been held at the property or showcasing their produce.

A: Inspired by Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation, it’s our version of Mushrooms on Toast using Good Growin Mushrooms, pumpkin hummus and Leavain Bakery sourdough.

Q: What’s in store for 2025?

This year our events will showcase particular bespoke produce, such as native honey or finger limes, instead of a whole region, so keep an eye out for announcements, and sign up to our newsletter 😉

For the LOVE of Food, Flavours and Views: It’s Tamborine Time

To mark February as the month of love, we are sharing ours for Tamborine Mountain and it’s flavour stops, sips and bites, bakers, brewers, distillers, winemakers and more.

Just an hour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain is home to locally distilled, award-winning True-Blue Gin, Butter Whiskey and Choc ‘n’ Chilli Liqueur, stunning vineyards and acclaimed cheesemakers, possibly the best sausage rolls in the country and Queensland’s first national park plus views that will blow your hair right back!

The famous Whipbirds of the ancient rainforest provide the soundtrack, there’s a spectacular Skywalk 30m above the valley and your choice of waterfalls … to chase! It’s great as a Day Trip or a longer staycay with a range of boutique hotels, cabins, camping and glamping, luxe offerings and more.

Here's what we’re loving:

THE CAULDRON DISTILLERY at 89-123 Hartley Road is just three years old and has a glorious seven hectares of vineyards and lush green meadows perfect for picnics, lawn games and sips, plus its dog friendly. Their specialty is GIN 🥛

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN DISTILLERY at 10 Macdonnell Road is Australia’s MOST awarded distillery and liquor brand this century! Yep, their range is mind blowing, there’s not a spirit or liquor these guys can’t conjure! Prepare to go down a liqueur-lined rabbit hole!4

LOBORN at 46 Main Street and the newest flavour spot. Loborn’s founder, Tom Drewett, has reinvented the bitter aperitif (think: Aperol) using local Australian botanicals. Loborn literally means LOcally BOrn, and Tom has successfully created a distinctly modern amaro that pays homage to the rich history of Italy but has a distinctly local Tamborine Mountain flavour. Tastings and bar.

Hint: stay at the just opened The Tamborine | Boutique Accommodation Tamborine Mountain as they serve Loborn and have shared pantry full of local produce!

WITCHES FALLS WINERY at 79 Main Western Road is a perfect place to wander the vineyard (and take some stunning selfies 🤗), sip famed wines, share a local produce platter and talk to the winemakers. Sunset Sips are a highlight event and its dog friendly.

BOXER BREWING is BRAND NEW and onsite at Witches Falls, featuring The Kennel’ Tap Room, Sports Bar and the Brewery Door and home to the Cerveza, IPA, Lazy Ale and a Pale Ale.

PICNIC REAL FOOD BAR at 46 Main St is the brainchild of famed Queensland foodie Brenda Fawdon and the home of impossibly delicious sausage rolls (🤤). A cool fact is they have a closed-loop sustainability system that turns the kitchen waste into compost to minimise garbage and nourish the soil. PS. Wear stretchy pants.

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN COFFEE PLANTATION at 64 Alpine Terrace is an all-local coffee experience: their coffee is grown, roasted and blended on the mountain, and their restaurant is 👍🏽

FRANQUETTE is an exquisite new French Bakery at 155 Long Road.

ST BERNARDS HOTEL is Tamborine’s oldest pub, on Alpine Terrace and off the beaten track with sweeping views of Tamborine Valley.

SAINT MARTHE BRASSERIE at 13 Main Street is JUST opened and features French-inspired dishes under Chef is Marcus McKay .

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN GLADES is the home of glamping, luxe stays and gorgeous self-contained lodges, and it’s pet friendly! Cedar Creek runs crystal clear and cold, and is the perfect walk, or just sit and listen, before dining at the Rainforest Restaurant which has shared produce platters and great cocktails! PH: there’s a Japanese-inspired day spa opening this year!

FARM STALLS 🧑🏽‍🌾There’s always farm gate stalls open, with great hyper local produce for a just a few bucks, or an honesty system; all part of the mountain community.

Love Views?

Grab a hamper from Picnic or any of the cafes or restaurants, and head to Robert Sowter Park Lookout on Main Western Rd for magnificent views and sunsets, plus amazing hang-glider action.

Want to work up an appetite?

Do the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk at 333 Geissmann Dr, it’s an eco-adventure MUST DO Skywalk Tamborine OR go chasing waterfalls (🎶 😉) - for a guaranteed waterfall, follow the 1.1km track Curtis Falls, or pack a picnic and follow the trail to Cedar Creek Falls to peer up at the 15-20m waterfall. There’s the 3.1km Witches Falls Circuit, which has incredible views. The walk to Cameron Falls takes about half an hour each way! *Always check if walks are open.

Manager, SEQ Food Trails

Q: Five words that make South East Queensland such a great region for Food Trails?

A: Diversity, freshness, innovation, inviting & delicious

Q: Why are Food Trails so important for people to experience?

A: Creating journeys through SEQ’s incredible flavour landscape, meeting the passionate creators and producers, and tasting, smelling and savouring the most incredible food and drink offerings while learning about the who, what, where and when behind it, is an adventure and an education everyone should have.

Q: What’s the ingredient you cannot live without?

A: Chilli - I put it on and in everything and love a bit of spice!

Q: Who are the 5 people you would have for dinner and what would you serve?

A: Michelle Obama for great conversation, Mariska Hargitay as I'm a Law & Order tragic, Cathy Freeman for inspiration, Pink to get the party started and Kylie Kwong to help me cook chilli mud crab, prawn dumplings and XO fried rice which I'd serve with Heads of Noosa lager and a playlist of the best 70's, 80's and 90's music.

Q: What does South East Queensland look like in 5 years (2030)?

A: With the international spotlight on us, it's our chance to showcase this region and its incredible produce, natural experiences, people and places. As locals, we will learn more, experience more and appreciate more about what we have on our doorstep and build pride in our region’s offerings. Over the next few years, we will see an explosion in culinary experiences in our suburbs and outer regions. The quality and availability of local produce will grow and our connection and understanding of our local farmers will boom through Agritourism initiatives.
